Lack Of Handwashing Trips Up Murder Suspect

Placer County, CA — A man now sitting in Placer County Jail should have washed the bogus name he was using from his hand before sheriff’s deputies became suspicious about his true identity.

Rocklin police officers arrested “Lewis” Martinez on charges of automobile theft, evading arrest and possession of burglary tools. When Placer County sheriff deputies Jennifer Riggs and Ron Evans were booking Martinez into jail, they saw he looked down at his hand and read off “Lewis” Martinez when asked for his name.

The deputies checked Martinez’s identity through his fingerprints. That is when a felony murder warrant surfaced for Hugo Martinez, 19, from Mexico. Martinez is a suspect in a June 7 murder in Temecula in Riverside County. He and his brother are believed responsible for the fatal shooting of another man.

Martinez is being held in custody without bail. Riverside County authorities are scheduled to arrive in Placer County to interview him.
