Slip Up: Convicted Teen Burglar Left Slippers At Scene Of Crime
A teenage burglar in East Naples, Florida, who left his black slippers at the scene of the crime will spend his college vacation in the slammer.
On May 30, the teen, identified as 19-year-old Ezechiel Travis, of 7881 Classics Drive, was sentenced to 60 days in county jail by Collier County Circuit Judge Fred Hardt, who found him guilty of violating his probation by getting arrested on a drunken driving charge in New York.
Back in September of 2006, Travis pleaded no contest to three felony counts of burglary of an unoccupied structure and was sentenced to concurrent three-year probationary terms, which Hardt allowed him to serve in Amherst, New York, where he is in college. Among the conditions of his probation were that Travis was to avoid alcohol and any place that sold it or served it.
He had faced up to five years in prison on the third-degree felony charges.
On May 30, in addition to jail, Hardt ordered Travis to remain in a substance-abuse program, to attend three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings weekly, and to continue with the other conditions of probation, including remaining in college.
Travis was busted on March 15, 2006, and charged with four counts of burglary to an occupied dwelling, burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, two counts of criminal mischief, petty theft, and grand theft. The crimes occurred in the 7800 block of Players Street, in the 7700 block of Trent Court, Grand Lely Drive, Celeste Drive, and an attempted break-in in the 7800 block of Classics Drive.
According to Collier County sheriff’s reports, Travis was arrested after a Players Street resident called to report that a man entered her home and demanded that she hang up. She had been calling deputies but fled to await their arrival.
Five minutes later, deputies got a call from a neighbor, who was woken up when the sliding glass door to her bedroom was opened, revealing a figure in the doorway. Her husband chased away the intruder.
Deputies also said that booze was stolen from several homes and black slippers with white fur lining were discovered outside one. While combing the area, reports say, deputies discovered a vodka bottle in the grass next to a house in the 7800 block of Classics Drive and a screen hanging off a window.
They checked to determine that home had been burglarized and Travis’ father invited them inside. His son matched the suspect’s description — and he also owned the slippers.
