Burglar Leaves Behind Calling Card

A bungling burglar in Rugby, England, who stole treasured and one-of-a-kind family recordings was busted after he helpfully left behind a card with his name on it.

Because of heavy drugs to cope with a difficult birth, a mother named Kate Hughes could not remember much for her daughter’s first two months so her husband recorded her first few weeks for her to watch back later.

But the burglar, identified as 17-year-old Keirron Neal broke into her home while she was taking her daughter to a mother-and-baby group.

He absconded with valuable jewelry, a laptop, and video recordings from a camcorder.

However, police were able to track him down after he dropped a Warwickshire Youth Offending card with his name on it.

Warwick Crown Court heard that the teenage burglar had carried out the break-in a mere six days after being freed from custody for a previous burglary offense.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months detention and training, but was told that if he had been an adult he would have been facing a minimum sentence of three years because it was his third conviction for domestic burglary.

When Neal was arrested, he denied the offense, but the next day, he cooperated and showed officers where the by-then broken tape from the camcorder had been left.

Although the tape was recovered, it was damaged, likely beyond repair.

“When we were burgled I was mainly concerned about losing the tape with that footage on it, and have had many sleepless nights,” Mrs. Hughes said in a statement.

“I accept a quantity of valuable property was taken including that which is the most difficult to replace, the property of sentimental value,” said Neal’s defense attorney, Andrew Tucker.

“But he did what he could to try to help its recovery, and in fact the tape was recovered but unfortunately it is in a damaged condition.

“He could have had no idea the item which would be most precious would have pictures of the early days of her child, although of course one could say he took that risk.”
