Burglary Suspect Done In By GPS Ankle Bracelet

Perhaps one man in Springfield, Ohio, thought that he made a clean getaway when he committed multiple burglaries in Clark and Miami counties between December of 2007 and January of this year.

But authorities tracked down the Montgomery County man, identified as 37-year-old James Wombles, by following the GPS signals from his electronic monitoring bracelet. He has been in the Miami County Jail since his January 22 arrest on charges of receiving stolen property.

On March 11, Clark County Sheriff’s deputies charged Wombles with six counts of burglary for break-ins that he committed in the area between December 26 and January 16, according to sheriff Detective Andy Reynolds.

Officials nabbed Wombles in January after investigators tracked him at the scene of an alleged burglary in Miami County by following the GPS signals from his ankle bracelet, Reynolds said.

Wombles was later arrested during a traffic stop when deputies found several stolen items in his car. He had been wearing the ankle bracelet as a term of his probation for an unrelated crime that he committed in Miami County, said Reynolds.

Wombles will be extradited to Clark County after he stands trial for his Miami County burglaries.
